The Dearest Possession

And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house. Bring the men into the house, and slay, and make ready, for the men shall dine with me at noon.
Genesis 43:16 (RSV)

When their brother, who was to be their savior saw that they had brought with them the dearest treasure of their family, there went forth the instant word for a kings’ feast to be prepared for them. That is all that my Savior is waiting for that He may lavish the fullness of His bounty upon me; my bringing to Him the dearest possession of my life, myself in unconditional surrender to His mastery, confession my helplessness and awful need. Then He gives the word that I may come into His own house and ear at His table the best food of which He Himself partakes.

The surrender of Benjamin their dearest possession was the key to all the treasures of the kingdom yes, even to the recognition of Joseph by the brothers and Jacob. The surrender of the costliest possession of my life is the key to the treasures of the kingdom for me yes, even to the full recognition and appropriation of Christ at my whole and only life.

Oh Lord Jesus show me more that I may give up and I may have more of Thee!

Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

In the morning…

Psalms 143:8
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Psalms 91:1 (Free Translation)
He that goeth aside to sit quietly in the secret place with the Most High, will find him coming over to close that this man shall be lodging under the very shadow of the Almighty

A moment in the morning ere the cares of the day begin,
Ere the heart’s wide door is open for the world to enter in;
Ah, then, alone with Jesus, in the silence of the morn,
In heavenly sweet communion, let your happy day be born;
In the quietude that blesses with a prelude of repose,
Let your soul be soothed and softened as the dew revives the rose.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all

— Emily Dickinson

Psalms 5:3
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

Joy is…

Galatians 5:22 (Amplified Bible)
But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness). . .

Joy is not gush; Joy is not jolliness. Joy is simply perfect acquiescence in God’s will, because the soul delights itself in God Himself. “I delight to do thy will,” said Jesus, though the cup was the Cross, in such agony as no man knew. It cost Him blood. Oh, take the Fatherhood of God in the blessed Son the Savior, and by the Holy Ghost; rejoice in the will of God, and nothing else. Bow down your heads and your hearts before God, and let the will. the blessed will of God, be done. Prebendary Webb-Peploe

I have a heritage of joy
That yet I must not see;
The Hand that bled to make it mine
Is keeping it for me.
My heart is resting on His truth
Who hath made all things mine.
Who draws my captive will to Him
And makes it one with Thine!

The Lord Is

The LORD is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.

The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises
and faithful in all he does.

The LORD upholds all who fall
and lifts up all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.

You open your hand
and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

The LORD is righteous in all his ways
and faithful in all he does.

The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth…

Distance

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you

Distance
An Acrostic Poem

Days, weeks, months, years, the hours, the minutes, the seconds and the miles
In between where we are, where we were and where we hope to be
Sometimes the distance is short and sometimes the distance is long
Time spans all distances, moving us closer together and further apart, all at the same time
As we traverse life’s ever winding highway, family and friends are found and lost along the way
Not knowing when we’ll meet again, we hold them in our hearts, shrinking the distance as we
Catch the memories shared and use them to propel us forward, pressing on in our journey, inching
Ever closer to eternity, with every step, every breath and every moment in this crazy, beautiful life.

Scriptures from Amplified Bible

Mat 26:58
But Peter followed Him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest’s home; he even went inside and sat with the guards to see the end.

Mat 27:55
There were also numerous women there, looking on from a distance, who were of those who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him.

Heb 11:13
These people all died controlled and sustained by their faith, but not having received the tangible fulfillment of [God’s] promises, only having seen it and greeted it from a great distance by faith, and all the while acknowledging and confessing that they were strangers and temporary residents and exiles upon the earth

Psa 73:28
But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God and made Him my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works.

Heb 4:16
Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].

Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

Peace Jesus Gives

“Peace be with you.”
John 20:19

The church of Jesus Christ began with a group of frightened men in a second-floor room in Jerusalem. Though they’d marched with Jesus for three years, they now sat . . .afraid. They were timid soldiers, reluctant warriors, speechless messengers. Daring to dream that the master had left them some word, some plan, they came back. But little did they know their wildest dream wasn’t wild enough.

Just as someone mumbles, “It’s no use,” they hear a noise. They hear a voice- *Peace be with you.” The one betrayed sought his betrayers. What did he say unto them?

Not “What a bunch of flops!”
Not “I told you so!”
NO “Where were you when I needed you?” speeches.

But simply one phrase, “Peace be with you.”

The very thing they didn’t have was the very thing he offered: peace.

Thanksgiving = The Highest Expression of Faith

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”
(1Thessalonians 5:18).

Thanksgiving is the highest expression that exists, for it acknowledges the hand of God at work in everything — even in the midst of things that are awful. Faith looks past the obvious and see the actual; it goes beyond what is seen, and sees Him who is invisible working all things after the counsel of His will. Our difficulty comes from the fact that we tend to judge things from our limited perspective. God wants to lift our vision to a higher and broader place, where we may see things as He sees them. ryle

Light after darkness; gain after loss.
Strength after weakness; crown after cross.
Sweet after bitter; hope after fears.
Home after wandering; praise after tears.
Sheaves after sowing; sun after rain.
Sight after mystery; peace after pain.
Joy after sorrow; calm after blast.
Rest after weariness; sweet rest at last.
Near after distant; gleam after gloom.
Love after loneliness; life after tomb.
After long agony, rapture of bliss –
Right was the pathway leading to this!
